Jean Elsen sale 140, lot 709

This specimen was lot 709 in Jean Elsen sale 140 (Brussels, March 2019), where it sold for €130 (about US$173 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1695C, Caen. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Rare. Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the palms of 1695, Caen mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Rare, Fine.)"

This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[1] prices this date only about 60% more than the common date, despite the insignificant mintage, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 1,765, plus 7,160 flans reformées.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM; this specimen 26,49 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl-1520A; Gad-217, Dr/4 № 510, Dav-3813, KM 298.5.
