Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1040

This specimen was lot 1040 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €240 (about US$333 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1695T, Nantes. Flan neuf. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Très rare Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of palms of 1695, nantes mint, new planchet. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Very rare, traces of adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] prices this date about 60% more than the common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 12,260 fn + unknown rf, a better date[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers; this specimen 27,24 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-3813, Dr/4 № 510, Dr/2 № 410, Dupl-1520; Gad-217.
