Goldberg sale 122, lot 2072
G119-2072r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2072 in Goldberg sale 122 (Los Angeles, June 2021), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. ½ Ecu de Strasbourg aux palmes, 1695-BB. Louis XIV. Obverse: Large fleur-de-lis. Reverse: Crowned shield of France within palms. Struck over earlier type. Sharply struck with luster. Extremely Fine." This coin, called a thirty five sols de Strasbourg, was one of the first issues of that mint after its capture by the French. It was struck 1694-1701 over the previous XXX sols de Strasbourg and only the 1694-BB is common. The obverse legend, "MONETA NOVA ARGENTINENSIS," means "new silver coin;" the reverse legend, "SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM," is "Blessed be the name of the Lord." The greenish color comes from the debased alloy.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all struck over XXX sols of 1684-89.

Specification: 15.30 g, 0.729 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-308; Gad-188, Dupl-1600, Dr/4 № 621, Dr/2 № 509.
