Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 1214

This specimen was lot 1214 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu de Flandre aux palmes, 1695 W, Lille. 2e réformation. D/ B. cuir. à d. R/ Ecu rond couronné entre deux palmes, écartelé aux armes de France, Bourgogne nouveau, Bourgogne ancien et Navarre. Très rare. Flan large. presque Très Beau. Provient de notre vente 103, 12 décembre 2009, 774. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of Flanders with palms of 1695, Lille mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: round arms of France, new Burgundy, old Burgundy and Navarre between two palms. Very rare, large planchet, about very fine.)"

These special issues for Flanders were ordained by Louis XIV to drive out foreign coin in the recently conquered regions of Flanders, Hainault, Cambresis and Luxembourg. This rare type was struck 1693-1700 at Lille along with the regular écu aux palmes (KM 298.20). Fractional half, quarter, eighth and one-sixteenth écus de Flandre aux palmes exist.

Recorded mintage: est. 60,000, all rf[2].

Specification: 37.65 g, .857 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 35,81 g.
