Sincona sale 77, lot 2890

This specimen was lot 2890 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$577 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Ferdinand II. 1619-1637. 1/2 Kippertaler zu 60 Kreuzer 1621, Brünn. Münzmeister Hans Pecs, 1621-1622. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. Leichte Verkrustungen. (Austria, Ferdinand II, 1619-37, sixty kreuzer of 1621, Brunn mint. Rare, Good very fine, Extraordinary condition, Some encrustations.)"

Kipper sixty kreuzer were struck at Brünn, Olmütz and Hall for the Hapsburg emperor Ferdinand II. Altho nominally a five-sixths thaler or gulden, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 24, 30, 48, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 15.04 g.

Catalog reference: KM 321, Herinek 814.
