Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 961

This specimen was lot 961 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €750 (about US$1,041 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, NUREMBERG, Ville impériale, AV ducat, 1700CGL (chronogramme). Klippe. D/ Trois écus. Au-dessus, une colombe ten. un rameau. R/ L'agneau de Dieu deb. à g. sur le globe terrestre, ten. une bannière inscrite PAX. Fine griffe au droit. presque Superbe. (Germany, imperial city of Nuremburg, gold klippe duct of 1700. Obverse: three shields; below, a dove bearing an olive branch. Reverse: the Lamb of God to left over the globe, bearing a banner inscribed PAX. Fine scratch on the obverse. about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck starting in 1700 and tho not cheap, is more available than other Nurnberger ducats of the eighteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown but restruck in the 1740's.

Specification: 3.5 g, .986 fine gold, this specimen 3,48 g.
