Sincona sale 4, lot 4421

The first specimen was lot 4037 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it sold for $1,552.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nuremberg. Ducat, 1700. Obv. Three shields with dove holding ribbon above. Leg: +SECVVLVM NOVVM CELEBRAT RESP. NORIBERGENSIS. Reverse: Lamb holding banner {PAX} on globe. Date in chronogram. Leg: TEMPORA NOSTRA PATER DONATA PACE CORONA. Fully lustrous. NGC graded MS-64. This is an incredibly choice example of this popular type. Lamb Ducats come in numerous denominations from 1/32 to 5 Ducat size and are avidly collected." The second specimen was lot 4421 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011) where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Nürnberg, Dukat 1700. Chronogramm. Drei Wappen, darüber Taube. Rv. Lamm mit Friedensfahne auf Erdhalbkugel nach links. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Germany, City of Nuremburg, ducat of 1700, date in chronogram. Obverse: three shields, dove above; reverse: Paschal Lamb to left, extremely fine to uncirculated)."

This type was struck starting in 1700 and tho not cheap, is more available than other Nurnberger ducats of the eighteenth century.
