Künker sale 352, lot 2012

This specimen was lot 2012 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,454 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NÜRNBERG, STADT, Dreifache Dukatenklippe 1700. Lammprägung. GOLD. RR Fassungsspuren, Felder geglättet, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, ducat of 1700, Paschal lamb. Very rare, tooled, very fine.)"

In 1700, the city issued a series of Paschal Lamb gold coins ranging from 1/32 ducat to five ducats, both in round and klippe (square) format. They were very popular as religious souvenirs and were extensively saved, making them common today. Some were restruck later to fill the demand. This denomination has the date in a chronogram.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 10,13 g.

Catalog reference: KM 261, Fr-1881; Kellner 45.
