This specimen was lot 1157 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €145 (about US$232 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1690 N, Montpellier. 1er type. 1e réformation. Droit: B. drapé à droite. Revers: Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnés de quatre lis. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver half écu of eight L's of 1690, Montpellier mint, first reformation. Obverse: draped bust to right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's, fleur-de-lys in the fields. Very fine.)"

This specimen was offered again as lot 1213 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €160. It is an demi-écu aux 8 L ("half écu with 8 L's") struck in Montpellier during the reign of Louis XIV of France. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes.

Recorded mintage: 3,674 on new blanks plus 163,512 restruck on old coins, today somewhat scarce.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,30 g.
