Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 1007

This specimen was lot 1007 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €235 (about US$327 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux huit L, 1690L couronné, Lille. 1er type. Flan neuf. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of 8 L's of 1690, Lille mint, crowned L mintmark, first type, new flan. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned L's, cantonned with eight lilies. Very fine.)"

The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux 8 L, petit buste transitoire ("half écu with 8 L's, small transitional bust") struck in Lille during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux palmes. Lille used a crowned L mintmark 1690-93 then switched to the "W" mintmark it used until the 1840's. The regular "L" mintmark was assigned to Bayonne.

Recorded mintage: 424,845 fn + unknown rf, a better date.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen 13,46 g.
