Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34150

This specimen was lot 34150 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. 2 Francs, 1811-Q. Perpignan Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS AU-58. A SCARCE example, this specimen stands as the sole representative in the PCGS census and resides at the cusp of Mint State status, yielding lustrous brilliance in the fields and some golden-tinged hues around the devices. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Parsy in 2010 for $1,497). Ex: Thierry Parsy (10/2010) Lot # 410." In 1809, the reverse legend was changed from "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE" to "EMPIRE FRANCAISE" and struck in this form until 1814. It is the most common Napoleonic two francs after the Year 12. This date is somewhat scarce.

Recorded mintage: 74,532.

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
