Stack's Bowers June 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70702
SB622-70702r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70702 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 20 Francs, 1811-W. Lille Mint. Napoleon I. NGC AU-58. A charming and wholesome example with able luster remaining. Just a few extra rub areas keep this from being full Mint State." The French empire under Napoleon produced large quantities of gold coins, made from metal looted from countries he conquered. However, nearly all of it was produced at Paris, leaving the branch mint issues quite scarce today, especially in choice condition. The type was struck 1809-15 in large quantities and common dates are readily available today.

Recorded mintage: 327,346[2], a slightly better date.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.

Catalog reference: F.516/21, Fr-512; KM 695.10; Gad-1025.
