Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 1032

This specimen was lot 1032 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €140 (about US$175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 1 franc, 1811 L, Bayonne. presque Très Beau. (France, Napoleon I (1804-14), silver one franc of 1811, Bayonne mint, about very fine.)"

This issue, from the Bayonne mint, is a better date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. This date is priced[1] about triple the common date (1811-A).

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
