Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1660

This specimen was lot 1660 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €180 (about US$263 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR 1 franc, 1811I, Limoges. Très Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon, 1804-14, silver franc of 1811, Limoges mint. Very Fine.)"

This issue, from the Bayonne mint, is a better date of a type struck 1809-14. In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. This type is the last and probably the most available Napoleonic franc. It was demonetized in 1869. A complete set of this type comprises 74 date and mintmark combinations, many very rare. This date is priced[2] about 2½ times the common date (1811-A).

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
