Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1661

This specimen was lot 1661 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €120 (about US$175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), AR demi-franc, 1811L, Bayonne. Rare Nettoyé. Très Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon, 1804-14, silver half franc of 1811, Bayonne mint. Rare, cleaned, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in France at numerous mints 1809-14 and a complete set comprises 64 dates and mintmarks. This date, from the Bayonne mint, is scarce in any grade, being priced six times the common date (1811-A).

Recorded mintage: 94,720.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, plain edge, 18 mm diameter, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier.
