Sincona sale 18, lot 2248

This specimen was lot 2248 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 200 (about US$264 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"5 Francs 1811. Marseille Vorzüglich. (empire of France, Napoleon I, five francs of 1811, Marseille mint, extremely fine.)"

Over 126,000,000 were struck of this type 1809-14, with a complete set comprising 86 date-mintmark combinations. This issue from Marseille is neither common nor rare.

Recorded mintage: 669,945 (a better date but not rare).

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, this specimen 24.99 g.
