Heritage sale 3135, lot 34614

This specimen was lot 34614 in Heritage sale 3135 (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $3,172. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip III gold Cob Escudo 1611-SV XF45 PCGS, Seville mint. Decidedly scarce, even more so than the larger Escudo denominations. The date is plainly visible, making this the only of its kind on the PCGS census for the 1611 emission." This type was struck at Seville 1610-11 and 1614-18. It is also known from Madrid but that issue comes undated. Like all gold cobs, it is rare in collectible condition. Unusually, this example has a legible date. This issue is mentioned twice in the SCWC, under KM 42.2 and KM 48.1. We believe KM 42.2 is intended for the date to the left of the cross and KM 48.1 for the date on top. As most examples don't have legible dates, we aren't sure how they can be attributed.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.43 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.33 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-4970; KM 42.2 or 48.1, Fr-196, Cal-1021.
