This specimen was lot 983 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €260 (about US$358 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Georg Ier (1615-1656), AR Engeltaler de 60 Groschen, 1622, Leipzig. D/ Ange de f. ten. l'écu de Saxe. R/ Deux anges ten. trois écus, sous la date. Différent: cor de chasse dans une ramure de cerf. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, silver angel thaler of sixty groschen of 1622, Leipzig mint. Obverse: angel facing, supporting the arms of Saxony; reverse: two angels supporting three shields, the date above. Privy mark: stag's antlers. slightly weakly struck, Very Fine.)"

The elector struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. The SCWC lists KM 362 (Annaberg mint), 363 (Chemnitz mint), 364 (Dresden, swan), 365 (Leipzig, shown here), 366 (Leipzig), 367 (Merseberg, rooster), 368 (klippe), 373 (Pirna mint), 374 (klippe), 377 (Zwickau), KM 378 (Zwickau mint), KM 379 (Zwickau mint, klippe), 380. This example has the weight of 7/9 thaler but the face value of 2½ thaler.
