Künker sale 386, lot 5397

This specimen was lot 5397 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €440 (about US$569 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. Kipper-Schreckenberger 1621, Dresden. Münzzeichen Schwan. IV. Sorte. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, min. Stempelfehler, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, kipper schreckenberger of 1621, Dresden mint, swan mintmark, fourth type. Scarce in this quality, attractive example with fine patina, minor die breaks, extremely fine.)"

The elector also struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. A schreckenberger was twelve kreuzer. The SCWC lists KM 223, 224, 225, 226, 227, 228 as schreckenbergers for 1621 and many different twelve kreuzers (KM 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 177, 178, 179, 180, 181, 182, 183, 184, 185, 186, 187, 188, 189, 190, 191, 192) which have the denomination "12" in the legend. Double schreckenbergers (worth 24 kreuzer or eight groschen) also exist.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 5,69 g.
