The first specimen was lot 1594 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €190 (about US$246 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Georg Ier (1615-1656), AR Kipper Engeltaler de 40 Groschen, 1621, Dresde. D/ Ange de f. ten. l'écu de Saxe. R/ Deux anges ten. trois écus, sous la date. Différent: cygne à g. Rare. presque Très Beau. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, silver kipper angel thaler of forty groschen of 1621, Dresden mint. Obverse: angel facing, holding the arms of Saxony; reverse: two angels holding three shields below the date, with swan privy mark. Rare, about Very Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 38398 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 40 Groschen (Kipper), 1622-CS. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. NGC AU-58." This kipper "angel" thaler was struck 1620-22 at numerous mints, Dresden in this case. The elector also struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. While this coin weighs about four-fifths of a thaler, it had a face value of five-thirds of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 23,05 g.

Catalog reference: KM 284, Mers. 936; Rahnenführer 115.
