Jean Elsen sale 162, lot 1739
JE162-1739r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1739 in Jean Elsen sale 162 (Brussels, June 2025), where it sold for €320 (about US$444 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Georg Ier (1615-1656), AR Kipper Engeltaler de 40 Groschen, 1622, Dresde. D/ Ange de f. ten. l'écu de Saxe. R/ Deux anges ten. trois écus, sous la date. Différent: cygne à g. Rare. Belle patine. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, silver kipper angel thaler of forty groschen of 1622, Dresden mint. Obverse: angel facing, supporting the arms of Saxony; reverse: two angels supporting three shields under the date. Mintmark: swan left. Rare, nice patina, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This kipper "angel" thaler was struck 1620-22 at numerous mints, Dresden in this case. The elector also struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. While this coin weighs about four-fifths of a thaler, it had a face value of five-thirds of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 19,73 g.
