Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55779
SB823-55779r.jpg

This specimen was lot 55779 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 40 Groschen (Kipper), 1621. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. NGC AU Details--Surface Hairlines. From the Augustana Collection." This kipper "angel" thaler was struck 1620-22 at numerous mints, Annaberg in this case. The elector also struck 8, 10, 20, 30 and 60 groschen in dozens of varieties. The shortsighted overissue of kipper coinage created a brief inflationary bubble in Germany 1619-24. After it burst, the debased coinage was called in and melted, accounting for its rarity today. While this coin weighs about four-fifths of a thaler, it had a face value of five-thirds of a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-281.
