Künker sale 386, lot 5402

This specimen was lot 5402 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Johann Georg I. 1615-1656. 1/2 Reichstaler 1623, Dresden. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung "Cygnus in Nummis". (electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, half thaler of 1623, Dresden mint. Attractive example with fine patina, extremely fine.)"

While the elector was merrily debasing the coinage with his kipper issues, the thalers, half thalers and quarter thalers remained good silver and proper weight. This half thaler with an ornate shield on the reverse was struck 1622, 1623 and 1626. A similar type (KM 102) with a square top and sides was struck 1617-24.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 14.62 g.

Catalog reference: KM 381, Clauß/Kahnt 178.
