Künker sale 353, lot 3995

This specimen was lot 3995 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €150 (about US$209 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. 4 Groschen (1/6 Taler) 1817, A. Auf der Brust zwei Kreuze, eine Medaille und ein Stern sichtbar. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, four groschen or one-sixth thaler of 1817, the king's bust with two crosses, a medal and a star. About extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-18 while the regime waffled between issuing four groschen (shown here) and its equal, the one-sixth thaler (KM 385). In 1821, authorities made up their mind and terminated the four groschen while the sixth thaler continued until 1868.

Recorded mintage: 10,776,606 including KM 385, a scarce date.

Specification: 5.35 g, 0.521 fine silver, this specimen 5,29 g.

Catalog reference: KM 394, Olding 112 b; AKS 25; J. 36.
