Künker sale 353, lot 3987

This specimen was lot 3987 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €500 (about US$696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Taler 1817, A. Kammerherrentaler. Seltener Jahrgang. Fast sehr schön. Die Vorderseitenumschrift mit der Abkürzung "K. V. PREUSS." soll den König zu der Bemerkung veranlaßt haben: "Ich bin doch nicht der Kammerherr von Preuss". Daher wird dieser Typ "Kammerherrentaler" genannt. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, "chamberlain" thaler of 1817. The obverse motto "K. V. PREUSS." is alleged to have led the king to remark, "I am not the chamberlain of Prussia." Rare date, about very fine.)"

This type was struck 1816-17 before the king's sarcasm led the mint to modify the obverse legend to read, "KOENIG VON PRUESSEN" (KM 396). This type is rare, the modified type is common.

Recorded mintage: 4,978,800 including KM 396.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 21,95 g.
