Künker sale 353, lot 4013

This specimen specimen was lot 4013 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Pfennig 1806, A. Prägung für die mittleren Provinzen. Mit großer Krone und breitem W auf der Vorderseite. RR Etwas poröser Schrötling, sehr schön. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, pfennig of 1806, struck for the middle provinces, with large crown and wide W on the obverse. Very fine, struck on a porous planchet.)"

The period 1801-06 marks the transition from the traditional billon pfennige to the new copper pfennige. The SCWC notes KM 373 (large W, shown here) and KM 383 (small W) and a copper type (KM 372). When the denomination was resumed in 1810, it was a copper coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 0.63 g, 0.052 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, this specimen 0,53 g.
