Künker sale 353, lot 4012

This specimen was lot 4012 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Pfennig 1804, A. Prägung für die mittleren Provinzen. Mit großer Krone und breitem W auf der Vorderseite. Sehr schön. Erworben am 2.4.1993 von Manfred Olding, Osnabrück. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, pfennig of 1804, struck for the middle provinces, with large crown and wide W on the obverse. Very fine.)"

The period 1801-06 marks the transition between billon pfennige and copper pfennige, with both types struck in 1804 along with numerous varieties. The SCWC notes KM 372 (copper), KM 373 (billon, large W, shown here), KM A383 (billon, Arabic 1) and KM 383 (billon, small W).

Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.

Specification: 0.63 g, 0.052 fine silver, 14 mm diameter, this specimen 0,61 g.
