Prussia 1804-A pfennig KM-A383
This specimen was lot 4014 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €600 (about US$835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1797-1840. Pfennig 1804, A. Prägung für die mittleren Provinzen. Mit kleiner Krone und schmalem W auf der Vorderseite sowie der arabischen Wertzahl 1 auf der Rückseite. RR Fast vorzüglich. Erworben am 18.03.1977 von Fritz Rudolf Künker, Osnabrück. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William III, 1797-1840, pfennig of 1804, struck for the middle provinces, with small crown and narrow W on the obverse and arabic number "1" on the reverse. Very rare, about extremely fine.)"
The period 1801-06 marks the transition between billon pfennige and copper pfennige, with both types struck in 1804 along with numerous varieties. The SCWC notes KM 372 (copper), KM 373 (billon, large W), KM A383 (billon, Arabic 1, shown here) and KM 383 (billon, small W).
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
