Prussia 1742-EGN guter pfennig
This specimen was lot 3575 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €65 (about US$91 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 1 Guter Pfennig 1743, EGN, Berlin. Prägung für die Mark Brandenburg. Münzmeister Ernst Georg Neubauer. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. Erworben im Mai 1989 von Wolfgang Rittig, Schwelm. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, one good pfennig of 1743, Berlin mint, struck for the mark of Brandenburg. Minor field marks, very fine.)"
This type, struck 1741-43, was called a "Guter Pfennig" because it contained silver, if only a trace. It would take 332 of these coins to make up the silver in a Prussian thaler, itself lightweight and debased.
Recorded mintage: 473,472 for 1741-42.
Specification: 0.54 g, 0.093 fine silver, this specimen 0,47 g.
