Prussia 1743-W 15 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3723 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,366 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 15 Kreuzer 1743, W, Breslau. Prägung für die Provinz Schlesien. Mit "W" (= Wratislawia) unter dem Schild. R Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Der Fünfzehnkreuzer von 1743 gehört zu den ersten Münzen, die die Breslauer Münzstätte unter preußischer Verwaltung fertigte. Das Nominal berücksichtigte jedoch weiterhin die bis zur preußischen Übernahme Schlesiens dort herrschende österreichische Kreuzerwährung. Die Kreuzerwährung war mit der preußischen Währung nicht direkt vergleichbar. Vom Metallwert entsprachen 1743 ein Fünfzehnkreuzerstück der Breslauer Münze zweieinhalb Zwölfteltalerstücken der Berliner Prägestätte. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, fifteen kreuzer of 1743, Breslau mint, struck for the province of Silesia, with the initial "W" under the shield. Rare, handsome patina, minor field marks, extremely fine to uncirculated. The 15 kreuzer from 1743 is one of the first coins that the Breslau mint produced under Prussian administration. However, the face value continued to take into account the Austrian kreuzer currency that was in place there until the Prussian takeover of Silesia. The kreuzer currency was not directly comparable with the Prussian currency. In terms of metal value, a fifteen-kreuzer piece from the Breslau mint corresponded to two and a half twelfth thaler pieces from the Berlin mint in 1743.)"
After Frederick the Great seized Silesia in 1742, he issued kreuzer denominated coinage for the province which did not directly convert into the thaler-based coinage used in the rest of the realm. One, three, six, 15 and 18 kreuzer were issued along with one and two groschel pieces. The last three kreuzer piece was struck in 1786.
