Philippines SB119-41289r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41289 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted,

"PHILIPPINES. 2 Quartos, 1834-MA F. Manila Mint. NGC VF-35 BN. VERY RARE one year type. Typically crude with softness from strike appearing in the lower left obverse and the corresponding area on the reverse. Several small corrosion pits are sprinkled across the obverse as is common throughout this series, but otherwise the surfaces are fairly smooth with attractive brown coloration. Despite its shortcomings, still incredibly desirable, with this being the only example certified by NGC or PCGS and also one of only two examples (this piece being the finer of the two) that appear in a search of archived auction data from over 130 international auction firms that date back nearly twenty years in some cases. A real treat for the advance[d] collector of Spanish Philippines. From the Ray Czahor Collection. Ex: Stack's Bowers & Ponterio ANA August 8, 2012 lot 40711 where it hammered for $1,350."

The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.
