from the Stack's Bowers 2019 NYINC sale, lot 41287
Philippines SB119-41287r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41287 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $5,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "Amazing 1830 Octavo. PHILIPPINES. Octavo, 1830-M F. Ferdinand VII (1808-33). PCGS MS-62 BN Gold Shield. EXTREMELY RARE date in this state of preservation. Sharp central details with hard glossy chocolate surfaces displaying a lovely blue sheen that pops out when tilted in the light. Virtually complete legends with minimal weakness. Only slight planchet roughness which is far less than normally seen on these issues. Truly a magnificent representative of the date let alone the type. Sure to see spirited bidding from the connoisseur of Philippines numismatics. From the Ray Czahor Collection." The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14812, KM-8; Basso-24; Cal-Type 441 #1616.
