Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 1407

This specimen was lot 1407 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 8 Reales, ND (Decree of December 20, 1834, suppressed March 31, 1837 (By Decree of February 1, 1836). Type VI countermark crowned Y.II. within circle. On an 1812 Sombrerete, Mexico War of Independence 8 Reales. VERY RARE host coin. Countermark well struck and off center. Host coin of typical crude manufacture with adjustment marks and a couple of minor natural planchet defects. Moderate wear with light attractive toning showing golden, azure and red hues. Countermark EF Details, host coin PCGS VF-30 Secure Holder." This counterstamp was applied 1834-37 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp.
