Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 4197

This specimen was lot 4197 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). NGC Fine Details--Chopmark. Crowned 'YII' countermark on a Bolivian 8 Reales, 1807. Tiny chopmarks." This counterstamp was applied 1834-37 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. This colonial eight reales was exempt from counterstamping and should not have been marked. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp. Counterstamped minor coinage is rare.
