Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 1390

This specimen was lot 1390 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 2 Reales, ND (Decree of December 14, 1835, suppressed March 31, 1837 (By Decree of February 1, 1836). Type VI countermark crowned Y.II. within circle. On an 1828-LIMAE JM Peru 2 Reales. RARE host coin and denomination. Countermark with several die chips, one at 12 o'clock with the other at 4 o'clock. Countermark well struck and slightly off center. Evenly worn with light attractive toning. Countermark VF Details, host coin PCGS VF-25 Secure Holder." This counterstamp was applied 1834-37 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp. Counterstamped minor coinage is rare.
