Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 1400

This specimen was lot 1400 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. 8 Reales, ND (Decree of December 20, 1834, suppressed March 31, 1837 (By Decree of February 1, 1836). Type VI countermark, Crowned Y.II. within circle. On an 1835-Ba RS Colombia 8 Reales. Scarce host coin. Countermark weakly struck, uneven and off center, with die crack at 7 o'clock. Remnants of mount removal at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock. Light wear with light attractive toning. Countermark VERY FINE, host coin NGC AU Details--Mount Removed." This counterstamp was applied 1834-37 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp. Counterstamped minor coinage is rare.
