Aureo sale 238, lot 275

This specimen was lot 275 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 225 euro (about US$367 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Manila. Resello Y.II. bajo corona sobre 8 reales de México, Guanajuato 1833 MJ. MBC. (Manila Y·II· with low crown counterstamp on 1833 eight reales of Guanajuato, Mexico. Very fine.)"

This type is known for 1834-37 and the SCWC lists this as one of the common undertypes. The authorities in Manila used this counterstamp (an abbreviation of "Isabel II") after the death of Ferdinand VII made the "F.7o" stamp obsolete. The SCWC[2] notes, "Countermarking of foreign coins was halted in Manila by the edict of March 31, 1837 after Spain had recognized the independence of Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile and other former colonies in Central and South America."
