This specimen was lot 41314 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $14,400. The catalog description[1] noted,

"PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (ca. 1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. NGC VF-30; C/S: XF Strong. Type VI Countermark, crowned Y.II. within circle. Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1822-Mo JM Mexico 8 Reales of the Empire of Iturbide, fifth bust type. This very SCARCE and popular type occasionally appears on the market, though usually in lower states of preservation with signs of mistreatment. Our records indicate 16 survivors for all Y.II. countermarks, with only six bearing the 5-4-1-II crown variety. The countermark is deep with bold details exhibiting the beginning signs of degradation in center of the punch. The host is nicely preserved with even wear displaying rich slate patina. From the Angelita and Benito Legarda Collection. Plated in Piloncitos to Peso: A brief History of Coinage in the Philippines, by Angelita Ganzon de Legarda, M.D. pg. 32 Published Manila, Philippines July 1976."

This counterstamp was applied 1834-37 to Latin American pesos arriving in Manila from the newly independent republics, none of which were recognized by Spain. The SCWC lists over forty different types receiving this counterstamp. Counterstamped minor coinage is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver (host coin).
