Spain 1835-J 8 maravedis
This specimen was lot 58 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 750 euros (about US$1,249 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1835. Jubia. 8 maravedís. Valor en reverso. Marca de ceca J. Bellísima. Rara y más así. S/C-. (Eight maravedis of 1835, jubia mint, value on back with mintmark. Very nice, rare thus, about Uncirculated.)
This eight maravedis was worth 1/34 of a dollar; history does not record the reason for the odd division. This type was struck in Jubia 1835-36 and was accompanied by copper four maravedis. The Jubia mint was opened in 1812 during the French invasion and struck only copper coins. The type is not rare but scarce in nice condition.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: copper, 12.10 g, 29.0-29.1 mm diameter.
