Spain 1837Pam 8 maravedis Aureo 233-0076g.jpg

This specimen was lot 76 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 60 euros (about US$100 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1837. Pamplona. 8 maravedís. Fundida. Escasa. (MBC) (Eight maravedis of 1837, Pamplona mint, cast, scarce, very fine.)

Cast coinage generally appears only in emergency situations where normal die-struck coinage is unavailable; Pamplona was not one of the regular Spanish mints. The area may have been involved in the Carlist wars going on at the time. A rare variety exists without the ellipse around the "PP" mintmark.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: cast bell metal (bronze or brass), 12.10 g, 28 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16711, KM 517, Cal. 489.
