Aureo sale 242, lot 358

The specimen shown was lot 358 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 90 € (about US$140 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Isabel II (1833-1868). 1837. Barcelona. 3 cuartos. Bella. Escasa así. EBC-/EBC. (Isabel II, 1833-68, three cuartos of 1837, Barcelona mint, nice, scarce, nearly extremely fine.)"

This copper coin was issued from Barcelona for use there and in Catalonia. It is a one year type and accompanied by a copper six quartos. In the local currency, three quartos = 1/40 peso. This coin is not common but priced rather low in the SCWC. The last local Catalan issue is a rare six quartos dated 1848, after which regular Spanish coinage was used.
