On the death of Ferdinand VII, his daughter Isabel II succeeded to the throne. This was contested by Ferdinand's brother Carlos, who appealed to the conservative and ultra-Catholic factions of Spain. His main base was in Navarre and Catalonia, provinces with strong separatist tendencies, but he managed to hold Segovia long enough to strike this eight maravedis and a silver peseta, both rare. He was defeated and exiled in 1840, but Carlist rebellions smoldered for the rest of the century, particularly when the regime in Madrid was divided and weak.
