Aureo sale 233, lot 473

This specimen was lot 473 in Aureo y Calicó sale 233 (Barcelona, April 2011), where it sold for 2,600 euros (about US$4,330 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1834. Madrid. NC. 20 reales. Insignificantes marquitas. Bella. Muy rara y más así. EBC/EBC+. (Twenty reales of 1834, Madrid mint. Insignificant marks, handsome, very rare, extremely fine.)

The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set 20 reales = 1 peso instead of the traditional eight. The coins minted using that standard were not marked in any way different from the concurrent eight reales standard, a source of confusion for collectors today, It must have been a major irritant for the inhabitants of the time. This type, struck 1834-36, is scarce and this date is rare.

Recorded mintage: 4,739 plus an unknown number for assayer DG.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .785 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 576, Cal. 159, Dav-330.
