Aureo sale 238, lot 239

This specimen was lot 239 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 600 euro (about US$952 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1836. Madrid. CR. 20 reales. Golpecitos. Parte de brillo original. Rara. MBC/MBC+. (twenty reales of 1836, Madrid mint. Minor rim bumps, mint luster, rare, about extremely fine.)"

This Spanish twenty reales de vellon was struck in Madrid during the regime of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Madrid 1834-36. Later twenty reales were struck 1837-49. The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set twenty reales = one peso instead of the traditional eight. The coins minted using that standard were not marked in any way different from the concurrent eight reales standard, a source of confusion for collectors today. It must have been a major irritant for the inhabitants of the time.

Recorded mintage: 47,812, a very scarce date, verging on rare.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-17172, Cal. 161, KM 576, Dav-330.
