UBS sale 84, lot 2476

This specimen was lot 2476 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SPANIEN. Fernando VII. 1808-1833. 20 Reales 1833, Madrid. Mmz. DG. Selten. Patina. Gutes vorzüglich" (Spain, Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, 20 reales of 1833, Madrid mint, assayer DG. Rare, Good extremely fine).

The "de vellon" coinage system, used 1808-50, set 20 reales = one peso instead of the traditional eight. The coins minted using that standard were not marked in any way different from the concurrent eight reales standard, a source of confusion for collectors today, It must have been a major irritant for the inhabitants of the time. This one-year type was minted in small numbers the year of the unmourned king's death. The initials "DG" do not stand for a specific person, as was normally the case, but for Departamento del Grabado (Department of Engraving") and was used on patterns not intended for circulation.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .785 troy oz ASW, this specimen 27.01 grams.
