Spain 1835-M CR 80 reales
This specimen was lot 35077 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Isabel II gold 'De Villon' 80 Reales 1835 M-CR MS62+ NGC, Madrid mint. With only a single example ranking higher at NGC, and that by only half a a grade point, and none graded finer by PCGS, this beautiful representative of the type is poised to attract ample attention. The fields appear lemon-gold, lightly marked as is to be expected for the grade, and especially satiny towards the edges, with every letter of the legends razor-sharp. The reverse design seems even more exacting, with its myriad intricate details struck in expert style." This type was struck for Spain at Barcelona, Madrid and Seville 1834-36. The Barcelona issue is much rarer than the Madrid and Seville products. The superseding type of 1837-49 is much more available. It is the same size as the old two escudos struck in Ferdinand's time.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 21 mm diameter, 6.77 g, .875 fine gold.
