Spain 1823-S RD 80 reales
This specimen was lot 607 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €550 (about US$882 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1823. Fernando VII. Sevilla. RD. 80 reales. Tipo ´cabezón´. Parte de brillo original. Muy rara. MBC+/EBC-. (Spain, Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, Seville mint.)"
When the Bourbons were restored, they continued to strike this denomination 1822-48 simultaneously with the old two escudos, which is the same size. This type was struck 1822-23 at Madrid, Barcelona and Seville (shown here). The obverse legend refers to king Ferdinand, "by the grace of God and the Constitution," a constitution he was compelled to grant and which he violated at every opportunity. His despotic rule combined that incompetence and brutality later displayed by countless Latin American dictators.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, 0.190 troy oz AGW.
