Künker sale 263, lot 806

This specimen was lot 806 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1750, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube Cronenburgs Glück. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, kl. Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1750, Zellerfeld mint, on the "Cronenburg's Luck" mine. Lightly cleaned, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. This mining thaler was issued four times 1745-52; a similar thaler honoring the same mine is known from Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (Dav-2160).

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
