Künker sale 386, lot 5209

This specimen was lot 5209 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,098 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1751, Clausthal. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Werner Koch, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 273, Frankfurt/Main 1970, Nr. 975. (electorate of Hannover, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1751, Clausthal mint. About extremely fine.)"

This "bust obverse" thaler was struck 1751 only and is rather scarce. The thuggish portrait likely explains its discontinuance. Other thalers for 1751 include KM 194.2 (leaping stallion) and KM 232.1 (St. Andrew reverse). Altho mining thalers were very popular at this time, none were made in 1751.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 30.35 g.

Catalog reference: KM 291, Dav-2095; Welter 2547; Smith 118.
