Künker sale 354, lot 5722

This specimen was lot 5722 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €200 (about US$278 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg II. 1727-1760. 1/3 Taler 1751, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 11, Osnabrück 1988, Nr. 1586. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George II, 1727-60, one third thaler of 1751, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. Handsome patina, extremely fine.)"

This "St. Andrew" type was struck 1740, 1743, 1746, 1749 and 1751. A third thaler with a wild man reverse was struck in the same period but bears the initials IBH. The elector George II was also king George II of England.
